We are faced with several choices in our life: be yourself or conform, dance for expression or for pleasing the crowd, stay true to yourself or sell out, resist injustice or turn the other way, become part of the solution or part of the problem--basically, take the blue pill (the common road) or the red pill (the road less traveled). The choice is up to you. 2) I chose to put mainly hip-hop music in my solo because that's where my heart is at when it comes to dancing. Also, I chose each song, not only for the melody/beat, but for the lyrics and what they're saying as well. Basically, you can take the lyrics from each song and equate it directly with what I'm trying to express through my solo. 3) I tried to present a well-rounded mix of the various places I've danced (not just breaking events). Quotes "Whatever does not spring from a man's free choice, or is only the result of instruction and guidance, does not enter into his very being, but remains alien to his true nature; he does not perform it with truly human energies, but merely with mechanical exactness." -Wilhelm Von Humboldt (p.150 of The Chomsky Reader) "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution." -Emma Goldman "It is easy for me to put on a show and be cocky and then feel pretty cool. Or I can do all kinds of phony things and be blinded by it. Or I can show you some really fancy movement. But to express myself honestly, not lying to oneself--that, my friend, is very hard to do." -Bruce Lee (p.xiii of Bruce Lee: Artist of Life) "My liberty is the liberty of everybody; for I am really free, free not only in idea but in fact, only when my liberty and my rights find their confirmation, their sanction, in the liberty and in the rights of all men, my equals." -Michael Bakunin (p.38 of The Social and Political Thought of Michael Bakunin) "The birds of the air and the mountain tops are not mindful of the serpents in their dark holes. Let the dead bury their dead. Be you yourself among the living, and soar high." -Jesus (p.141 of Khalil Gibran's Jesus, the Son of Man) "I think that it only makes sense to seek out and identify structures of authority, hierarchy, and domination in every aspect of life, and to challenge them; unless a justification for them can be given, they are illegitimate, and should be dismantled, to increase the scope of human freedom." -Noam Chomsky (interview with Kevin Doyle, May 1995) "The way I see it, freedom is the right to grow, it's the right to blossom. Freedom is the right to be yourself; to be who you are, to be who you want to be." -Assata Shakur (from Common's "A Song for Assata") Books: Recommended Reading for Change William Blum- Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower Noam Chomsky & Edward S.
